Photo Shoots: Vertical Aerial Photography

Most aerial photographers take vertical shots by having the pilot bank the aircraft so the photographer can shoot straight down. When using this method, I prefer to call the shots near verticals as it is nearly impossible to judge exactly when the camera is pointing straight down. Near verticals are useful as well as less expensive to obtain than true verticals. However, when a true vertical is needed for a scaled photograph, for example, a belly mounted camera must be used. The pilot must fly the aircraft straight and level, keeping the camera straight and level to obtain a true vertical shot. (See Sample Angles) There is set up time involved in preparing the vertical camera for shooting so obtaining these shots is slightly more expensive.
